Mastering New Year’s Resolutions

Goals in writing are dreams with deadlines.

2015- “My breakthrough year!”
My New Year’s Resolutions for 2015 were 50 items deep and encompassed: Building a thriving business, spending a month backpacking Iceland or New Zealand and clearing $30k in student loan debt. Lol! A bit lofty and idealistic wouldn’t you say? Try breakdown year.

Realizing this, a second attempt was made.

2016- “My breakthrough year!”
In 2016, I shortened the list to 1 resolution: Get out of the restaurant industry! Sounds simple enough. The problem was, getting out of the restaurant industry implied becoming a successful entrepreneur- not so simple.

With 2017 just around the corner, it’s time to sit down and reevaluate. I’m still in the restaurant industry, I have yet to make it to Iceland or New Zealand and regardless of making exorbitant monthly payments, I haven’t managed to make a dent in my student loans. This could be an invitation to beat myself up and feel like one hell of a loser, or it could be an opportunity to focus on my wins.

2015 wins-
Partnered with 2 incredible women with plans to build an innovative juicery.
Trusted my intuition, cut myself out of the deal and began believing in self.
Created and fell in love with my personal business plan.
Wrote my mantentions. 2 months later, met the love of my life.

2016 wins-
Received certification as a Shakti Flow Yoga Instructor.
Began instructing at a Pole and Aerial studio 3x a week.
Took on Health Coaching clients and cut back on hours at the restaurant.
Wrote and published my first E-Book.
Met my mentor and business coach.
Rebranded my business and nailed down my logo.

2017 winning already-
January 1st marks the launch of my second officially published E-Book.
January 9th marks the launch of my first monetized product offering.

Most people overestimate what they can do in a year and they underestimate what they can do in two or three decades.

Ya caught me Mr. Robbins. 🙂 Refusing to fall victim to overzealous and unrealistic resolutions, I’ve come up with a simple formula of mastery.

Mastering New Year’s Resolutions

  1. Nominate your non-negotiable. Aka your long-term goal (your 2 or 3 decade plan). In my case, building a thriving business is the non-negotiable.
  2. Think short and sweet. Come up with 3 or 4 clearly stated actionable goals that will draw you closer to your non-negotiable. I came up with: host a webinar, pack away 5k for business and generate 2k in alternate income.
  3. Prioritize and plan. Break down each goal into feasible, bite size pieces.
Hosting a webinar– invest in books, blogs and podcasts devoted to mastering webinar strategies. Discuss ideas with coach and set appropriate deadlines.
Pack away 5k for business– Naples is a seasonal city and winter is prime time to rake in the cash. By picking up 1-2 extra shifts a week (for the season) I can feasibly set aside $300 a week, reaching my goal by April. Excellent Smithers!
Generate 2k in alternate income– non-restaurant income may include: coaching, yoga instructing as well as monetized products (E-books) and offerings.

2017- “The year of advancement.”

I’d love to hear all about your big plans for 2017, as well as any tips and tricks you may have to offer in setting effective New Year’s Resolutions. Feel free to share in the comments below! And of coarse, Happy New Year!
